Mostly dead

 

“And to the angel of the church in Sardis write,

‘These things says He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars: “I know your works, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead. Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die, for I have not found your works perfect before God. Revelation 3:1-2

 

The church at Sardis did not receive very encouraging words – ‘you are dead’ John wrote. I know your works. You have a name that is alive, but you are dead.

 

But they were, as we see in the Princess Bride, only mostly dead. How do we know that? Because Jesus says Be watchful and strengthen the things that remain and are ready to die. Its plodding away. Its being in the race for the long haul.

 

But there is that glimmer of life. There is that tiny member in the fire.

 

And it only takes a spark to get a fire. We need to dig down deep and get that fire going again and revive that nearly dead spirit strengthen the little that is alive. Don’t let that last ember go out.
