John, to the seven churches which are in Asia:
Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to
come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus
Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over
the kings of the earth.
To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own
blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory
and dominion forever and ever. Amen. – Revelation 1.4-6
We see a lot of descriptions
of Jesus in the book of Revelation. All of them point to His glory and majesty
and power. The images are striking and might even seem scary.
For those of us who believe
though they images give us great hope and encouragements.
Here we read that Jesus is a
faithful witness, that is the firstborn of the dead, and that He is the true
ruler over all the earth. He is in charge ultimately even though Satan often
seems in control of this sinful broken world.
All of our human rulers are
going to fail us. They are only human. They really are no different than us. They
will let us down. They will not always be faithful.
But God is always faithful.
He will never ever let us down no matter what. When everyone lets us down He
never will. Everything He says in this book will come true.
We live in a broken world
with broken leaders, but we can live here as a part of a heavenly kingdom where
we will never be let down.
