It is finished

After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, “I thirst!” Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth. So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit. – John 19.28-30

We often read about the last words of famous people. Many times they are powerful, thoughtful, provocative words.

But one set of last words are the most powerful and important ever spoken – ‘it is finished!’

But what was finished? What was done? What was accomplished?

Everything that mattered. All that was needed to accomplish the work of eternal salvation was done. The price was paid. The work was accomplished. The gift of salvation was accomplished.

That means that there is nothing I can do to accomplish the work of salvation. Jesus paid it all. There is no ‘do’ in salvation. It is all done. The door of salvation was opened. The way is clear, the truth is proclaimed, and eternal life is on offer.

Jesus said ‘it is finished,’ He gave up the ghost, and all that had to be done was done. Our way of salvation was made clear.
