For we did not
follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you the power and coming
of our Lord Jesus Christ, but were eyewitnesses of His majesty. For He received
from God the Father honor and glory when such a voice came to Him from the
Excellent Glory: “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” And we
heard this voice which came from heaven when we were with Him on the holy
mountain. – 2 Peter 1.16-18
This is an interesting
account of a unique situation. Jesus
took Peter, James, and John up to a mountain. There Jesus was transfigured into
a reflection of the light of God’s glory. Moses and Elijah appeared and the
voice of God booms down from heaven.
Peter, James, and John had
the honour to see Jesus in all of His power and glory and majesty. They heard
to voice of God day, ‘this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.’
This is a powerful moment.
Not every believer on earth was going to see this because Jesus ministry on
earth was just about to draw to a close.
There are a couple of things
to note here for the next couple of days, but for Peter, James, and John here
was the motivation and impetus for the work they were about to embark. The saw
their Teacher magnified in all His glory. The saw two prophets signifying that
that the prophecies on the Old Testament were being fulfilled in Christ, and
they saw God’s seal of approval in the work.
They had all they needed to
carry on. You would think that they would have no more problems following Him.
The fact that they did is a reminder what we need to take heed. Peter
remembered how he had betrayed Jesus even after this and he is going to remind
us of the need for us to pay attention. We need to remember just who Jesus is.
We think how easy that would
be if we saw the same vision. Peter is going to go on to show that what we have
is even better.
