But also for
this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue
knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to
perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly
kindness love. - 2 Peter 1:5-7
At the end of the list, to
top it all off, we have add love. Love makes the list almost every time we have
a description of Christian virtues. A lot of times it is at the end of the list
to top it all off. Paul wrote in a similar context that above all else we must
put on love. It is the sure sign of maturity.
I think love is at the end
because it wraps everything else up and because it is the thing we must
remember the most. Love is the ultimate test of Christian virtues.
So how are we doing? How
well do we love? Does our love reflect the love of Christ.
We never get to cease adding
love. It is a lifetime commitment. Love sets us apart. It is how people know we
follow Christ. If we can’t love others we really don’t love God.
Love wraps it all up and
love it what makes all the rest fall into place.
Add love, add more love, and
more love. Do everything in love. Above all else put on love.
