You crown the year

You crown the year with Your goodness,
And Your paths drip with abundance. – Psalm 65.11

We are still not all that far into 2017. 2016 is still fresh in our memories and for most of us it was a mixed year of good news and bad, of happy days and sad. 2017 promises to be more of the same.

For some of us the change of year is taking place in a time of uncertainty and turmoil. The psalmist lived in a similar time, but this whole psalm talks about the blessings an the goodness of God. Just before the verse above we read:

You visit the earth and water it,
You greatly enrich it;
The river of God is full of water;
You provide their grain,
For so You have prepared it.
You water its ridges abundantly,
You settle its furrows;
You make it soft with showers,
You bless its growth.

And then the psalmist writes ‘You crown the year with Your goodness.’

We must remember that God is good everyday and all the time. His goodness prevails even in the worst of times. Who knows what the year ahead holds? Our prayer is that no matter what happens we can trust the Lord will crown the year with His goodness to carry us through whatever is coming. His goodness will get us through all the badness.
