And your wages for what does not satisfy?
Listen carefully to Me, and eat what is good,
And let your soul delight itself in abundance. – Isaiah 55.2
Why are you wasting your money are things that are not important? Why are you spending your whole pay cheque on things that can never satisfy you?
Wow! What a great question! The question applies today at least as much as it did when Isaiah penned these words.
I like these words from the country music song ‘Mayberry.’ I know it is a secular song and has nothing to do with faith, but it nails what the world is doing today.
‘Sunday was a day of rest. Now it's another day for progress. And we can’t slow down, ‘cause more is best. Its all an endless process.’’
The phrase ‘it seems like the world is spinning faster than it did in the old day’ also appears in the song and that describes to me the madness of the world in its pursuit of, well, I don’t know what we are all pursuing and nobody seems to know. It is just a rush for more.
I think the rush for more and more is ever maddening because no matter how much more we get it is never more enough and the more we chase more the more we realise that the only answer is more and more never does what we want.
There is an answer to this quest for more. It is not a call to abandon everything or to give up all our worldly goods, but it is a call to focus on the things that are really important. The call is to stop spinning our wheels in vain pursuit if that unknown something that we go after. It is a call to listen to the Lord and find out what is really important.
There is hope and peace and satisfaction. We don’t have to me caught up in the race race. The answer follows in the next few verses.
