A clean heart

Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me – Psalm 51v10

At first I only wanted to focus in the 'steadfast spirit' aspect of this vers. I can't really, however, just skip over the first part of it. 'Create in me a clean heart, O God.'

The heart is an interesting topic in scripture. The condition of the heart is pretty clear – 'the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked.' While some folks might say something like – 'Just trust your heart and you won't go wrong' they could not be more wrong. If you trust your heart you will always go wrong. You just can't trust it.

So how does something that is deceitful and desperately wicked become clean?

There really is only one way – 'If we confess our sins he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.' No matter how hard we might work, what methods we use, or how hard we scrub nothing can get the heart clean apart from God's cleansing power.

David's prayer is one that I think each of us should keep in mind when we are tempted to see and when our deceitful heart rears its ugly head. Only He can make and keep it clean.
