Not mixed with faith

Therefore, since a promise remains of entering His rest, let us fear lest any of you seem to have come short of it. 2 For indeed the gospel was preached to us as well as to them; but the word which they heard did not profit them, not being mixed with faith in those who heard it. – Hebrews 4.1-2

There cannot be much sadder words that ‘not mixed with faith.’ The folks Hebrews addresses here are people who had some knowledge of God’s word. They were probably a part of the visible assembly.

When the writer spoke of rest he said that sadly some professors who looked like they had it all we going to fail because they had not mixed the word of God with faith.

The Bible is a helpful book for all. Following its teachings and trying to follow the principles that Jesus taught will produce a better life.

But that’s all it does unless it is mixed with faith. If there is not faith mixed with all that knowledge a better life on earth is where it is going to end. Without faith, we know, it is impossible to please God.

So unless I have faith all the Bible I read and all the good I do as decent a chap I might be I am going to miss the rest that God has promised those who trust Him.

We all know ‘good people.’ But even good people need true faith in Christ. Religion will always fall short, unless mixed with faith.
