These are
wells without water, clouds carried by a tempest, for whom is reserved the
blackness of darkness forever For when they
speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through the lusts of the
flesh, through lewdness, the ones who have actually escaped from those who live
in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of
corruption; for by whom a person is overcome, by him also he is brought into bondage.. -
2 Peter 2.17-19
False teachers are
insidious. The seem to offer the best of everything. They seem to offer liberty
and licence without penalty. They offer a world where anyone can do whatever
they want without recourses. They seem
to offer easy hope to the thirsty soul.
These folks promise liberty
from restraint. They promise pure freedom, but at the end of the day they bring
only destruction. They promise the kind of no restraint living that so many
seem to desire.
But there is no real hope in
what they offer. It is all empty promises. There is no peace of comfort or
satisfaction in what they offer. Man’s only hope is in Jesus and that’s why the
false teachers want to lead us astray.
They promise liberty but all
they can give bondage.
We must beware of those dry well and instead look to the spring of living water
