who, when He
was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten,
but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; who Himself bore our sins
in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for
righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed. For you were like sheep going
astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls.- 1
Peter 2.23-25
What does it mean for us to
live in righteousness?
When we got saved all of the
righteousness of Christ was imputed to us. We were made righteous with His
perfect righteousness.
The problem is that we are
not perfect people. We can and too often do try to walk in our own form of self-righteousness.
All of my righteousness is nothing better than a pile of filthy rags.
So to live in righteousness means
that I strive to live in Jesus’ righteousness and not my own. His righteousness
is perfect and only in Him do I have any hope to live in any kind of right
living.
My righteousness ends in
destruction. Jesus' righteousness leads to godly loving and to eternal life. My
life needs to show His righteousness to a world wandering around not even
knowing when it stumbles. We preach righteousness and our lives are to reflect
it to the world.
