A spiritual house

Coming to Him as to a living stone, rejected indeed by men, but chosen by God and precious, you also, as living stones, are being built up a spiritual house, a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.  – 1 Peter 2.4-5

I love family. We are family people. It is part of our nature. People are always looking for some sense of family group. We have work families and sports families and national families and societal families and of course we have our physical family units.

But there is one most precious family of all. God calls His church a spiritual house, or household. We are, among so many other things, God’s family. Those who know Jesus have moved from the family of this world and the family of Satan to the family of God.

God is our Father. Jesus is our Brother. We are brothers and sisters in Christ. We are one in the Spirit. We care for each other. We come from every land and nation and tongue and people and colour and race and despite our vast differences we are one in Him.

As a family we love and share and have care for and lift up and edify and meet needs and comfort and challenge and all the things families do. We come together. It is not natural for families never to come together. That’s why we have the Church and that’s why we have church. This current state, when we cannot meet because we cannot travel or because all meetings are banned is not right. It will never be right. Church is essential. I wish I knew what to do about this.

Despite all this we can still family. We can pray and share and communicate and love and video call and text and meet together for church online. Our family needs each other now more than ever.

We are a spiritual house. Lets be sure that we are there for each other.
