For to this
you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving us an example,
that you should follow His steps:
“Who committed
no sin,
Nor was deceit
found in His mouth”; - 1 Peter 2.21-22
Follow Jesus. We sing a song
about deciding to follow Jesus. It’s a good song packed with meaning. No matter
what, even if I do it alone, I have decided to follow Jesus.
The question is whether we
really mean what we sing. Following Jesus and walking in His steps mean that we
are willing to follow Him on the path of suffering.
Now, of course, that is not
a path of exclusively suffering, but it is part of what we must be willing to.
Obedience led Jesus to the cross. If we follow Him we must be aware that our
obedience could lead us to do the same.
Nobody likes the idea of
suffering, not even suffering for Jesus, but we need to be aware that it may be
what we are called to do.
