Trusting in chariots

Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help,
And rely on horses,
Who trust in chariots because they are many,
And in horsemen because they are very strong,
But who do not look to the Holy One of Israel,
Nor seek the Lord!
Yet He also is wise and will bring disaster,
And will not call back His words,
But will arise against the house of evildoers,
And against the help of those who work iniquity.
Now the Egyptians are men, and not God;
And their horses are flesh, and not spirit.
When the Lord stretches out His hand,
Both he who helps will fall,
And he who is helped will fall down;
They all will perish together – Isaiah 31.1-3

Woe to those who go down to Egypt to get their help. Those folks are looking to horses and chariots and warriors because they are many and they are strong.

People don’t seem to change much do they? Today people still trust in things that they think are strong. We trust in our governments. We trust in our stuff. We trust in our bank accounts. We trust in our friends. We trust in our churches.

There is nothing wrong with those things. There is nothing wrong with having some confidence in them.

But if that is where we put our faith we are going to be disappointed. Since none of those things are perfect all of those will eventually let us down. The wheels are always going to fall off the chariots.

But things are different with God. The wheels are not going to fall off with Him. He is our steady rock and our steady path. We can always put our trust in Him.

Quit relying on those chariots.
