Because the breath of the Lord blows upon it;
Surely the people are grass.
The grass withers, the flower fades,
But the word of our God stands forever.” – Isaiah 40.7-8
When we are young sometimes we think we are going to live forever. That’s especially true when we are young. It seems like we have forever, so people don’t tend to have eternity in mind. Why bother with eternity when we have so long here on earth?
But as we get older we begin to realise that we really don’t have all that long. We look back at how quickly 40 or 50 or 60 or 70 years have passed and it is hard to imagine things can go so quickly and wonder ‘where have all those years gone.’ I was talking to an old friend recently and realised that some of the things we were talking about happened 50 years ago and more!
In the light of eternity our lives are just like the grass Isaiah talks about here. We appear, we grow and blossom and thrive, and then we pass away and are blown away like the wind.
That’s why we have to redeem the time. We don’t have much of it left. It is high time to wake up out of sleep. The time is coming when no man is going to be able to work.
