Purifying hope
Behold what
manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children
of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we
shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we
shall see Him as He is. And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself,
just as He is pure.- 1
John 3.1-3
Hope does a lot for us. Hope
gets us through trials and tribulations. Hope lets us endure. Hope lets us look
at this crumbling world and know that all is not lost.
But hope ought to do
something practical in our lives. We live in a terribly broken world. Pure is
not a word to describe this wacky world. It just gets brokener and brokener
with every newscast.
It doesn’t seem like hope
will do us much good, but it does. Hope helps purify us from the wickedness
around. It gives us a reason not to be embroiled in all this mess. We have the
hope that there is more to life that getting defiled by the world. We have a
perfect standard to aim for. We are strive for a Christlike purity that will
please Him and honour Him and glorify Him.
