that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may
give to you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of Him, the
eyes of your understanding being enlightened; that you may know what is the
hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the
saints, and what is the exceeding greatness of His power toward us who believe,
according to the working of His mighty power which He worked in Christ when He
raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His right hand in the heavenly
places, far above all principality and power and might and dominion, and every
name that is named, not only in this age but also in that which is to come. –
Ephesians 1.17-21
There
is an entire theology chapter on the doctrine of salvation and what salvation
brings in these few verses.
The
first thing we read about here is that salvation brings us wisdom and
revelation in the knowledge of Him. We saw a recent section on the knowledge of
God and here it is combined with the words wisdom and revelation of that
knowledge.
God
wants us to not only know about Him, to not only know him, but he wants us to
have a super-knowledge of Him. God wants us to know Him totally and intimately
and with all our hearts and minds and souls.
The
blessing is that the more we know God the more we see Him for Who He is. We see
Him and His love and mercy and grace and power and compassion. We see that He
is in control and that He is all powerful and all wise and all-knowing and that
He is everywhere and at all times. If we have this super-knowledge we learn
that we can depend on Him in every situation. When we know Him we know His
will.
Knowing
Him requires first of all that we know Him through His word, that’s how He
tells us about Himself. Knowing His requires the on going work of the Holy Spirit
in our lives. Knowing His also requires that we see Him working in our lives
and learning to trust Him always. He has revealed Himself to us and given us
all the wisdom we need to deal with this world.
Our
eyes are enlightened – let’s open them and look to Him.
