For all these things do the nations of the world seek after: and
your Father knoweth that ye have need of these things. But rather seek ye the
kingdom of God; and all these things shall be added unto you. –
Luke 12.30-31
What kinds of things does the world seek after? They
are not necessarily bad things. Clothes and food and shelter are things that we
need. They are necessities, but here we read that these are the things that the
world seeks after. So what’s the point? Is it wrong to go after them?
No, we need those things, but the point is that these are the not the things that we ought to spend our lives pursuing. This is not what
should occupy our time. This isn’t where we put our focus.
God knows what we need. Because He knows what we need
and He is our Father we don’t have to focus on all the other stuff. That gives
us time to spend our focus on the kingdom of God.
This is pretty profound. God is telling us that if we
focus on furthering His kingdom He will take care of the rest. God knows what
you and I need. We do what we can do to take care of ourselves, we focus on
doing God’s work, and let Him sort out the details of what we need.
He knows better than we do. Can’t we trust Him to do what He says?
