And I say unto you, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye
shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh
receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be
opened. If a son shall ask bread of any of you that is a father, will he give
him a stone? or if he ask a fish, will he for a fish give him a serpent? Or if
he shall ask an egg, will he offer him a scorpion? If ye then, being evil, know
how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly
Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? – Luke 11.9-13
As part of what we call the ‘Lord’s Prayer’ we have a
segment here that reminds us what kind of Giver our God is. Jesus says ‘ask,
and it will be given; seek and you shall find, knock and the door will be
opened.’ Jesus says that God is a Father who knows how to give what is best.
God knows how to gift ‘good gifts’ to His children just
like we know how to give good gifts to our children and grandchildren. He is
not going to give us bad things even when we ask for them. Remember, God knows
all of the ramifications of what He gives us. Things that I think must be right
God knows are not for our best. We need to trust Him to give us the good things
to us when we need them.
The greatest gift Jesus is talking about here, of course,
is the gift of the Holy Spirit that He gives to all who ask Him. His presence
is the greatest gift of all as we strive to get through this world. The Holy
Spirit is the greatest gift of all.
