By that will we have been sanctified through the
offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. And every priest stands
ministering daily and offering repeatedly the same sacrifices, which can never
take away sins. But this Man, after He had offered one sacrifice for sins
forever, sat down at the right hand of God, from that time waiting till His
enemies are made His footstool. For by one offering He has perfected forever
those who are being sanctified. –
Hebrews 10.10-14
I am amazed at how often this phrase ‘once for all’ is
repeated. When Jesus said ‘it is finished’ it looks like He really meant it.
Nothing more need to be done.
Here is another aspect of His ‘once for all
sacrifice.’ Once and for all Jesus was already perfected us for His glory. That
is signed, sealed, and delivered and it can’t change because He has already
made us perfect in the sight of God.
But at the same time note that we ‘are being
sanctified.’ In theology we speak of our positional perfection, but also our
progressive sanctification.
All through life we are being sanctified as we grow in
grace and in our Christian lives. This is the outworking of our ultimate
perfection.
That God that I am already perfect in Christ and that
He is progressively making me the man He wants me to be.
