Him we
preach
Him we preach, warning every man and
teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in
Christ Jesus. –
Colossians 1.28
Preaching is an interesting thing to do. It is
interesting to be in a situation where week after week you have a chance to
teach a group of people.
Sometimes that opportunity can be tempting. There are
times when, I admit, I can feel like there is something I need to say. I think
anyone who preaches knows the feeling of wanting to go to the pulpit with our
own agenda. We can feel like what we have to say and with the platform to say
it we can just go ahead and do our thing.
But that is a mistake. We can't go to the pulpit with
our own agenda and our own plans - we simply go to the pulpit to preach Jesus.
That means I can’t preach programmes or
policies or platforms or politics. I am to preach Jesus and only Jesus.
If we learn to preach Jesus as our Saviour and Jesus
as our Lord we can't go wrong. When we preach the word, guess what? We preach
Jesus because He is the Word.
Of course we preach the whole counsel of God. But
woven through the whole counsel of God is Jesus, Christ in us. Apart from that
the Bible is just a good guidebook of life. With Christ it is everything.
Preaching anything else will never draw men to Christ
or help them grow to maturity. Only in Jesus do we find the source of all
wisdom. Everything else is secondary.
Preach Jesus.
