Little faith

And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him! – Matthew 8.26-27

Just a few verses after reading about the great faith of the Roman army officer we read about a group of folks and their ‘little faith.’ I think it is probably the last group of people we would think of who would have ‘little faith.’

Jesus and his disciples were on a boat in the middle of the Sea of Galilee. I’ve never been there, but I’ve heard that when these storms blow up they are monstrous and deadly. The waves were fierce and the wind was howling.

While the disciples panicked Jesus slept peacefully in the hold.

When they found Him they were stunned! ‘How can You be asleep? Don’t You care that we are about to die?’

‘Why are you afraid? You guys have such little faith!’

Then He went and calmed the storm.

How often do we face the various storms of life and tremble in fear because we feel like Jesus is asleep on the job? We think our troubles are insurmountable even though we say we have faith that God will sort things out.

No matter what storm we are in today or what storm is coming down the road it is not going to be anything Jesus can’t handle, because, as Nahum said, ‘the clouds are the dust of His feet.’

Oh me of little faith – help my unbelief Father.
