Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look
on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and
holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than
he? – Habakkuk 1.13
Habakkuk was confused. He could not understand how the
evil in Israel could keep going on.
Part of the confusion on Habakkuk’s mind was that he
really knew God. He knew God’s character and what he saw here seemed out to
character for what he knew about Him. In his mind he wondered how God could
allow the sin. He wondered here how the Chaldeans could be used to punish
Judah, who, with all their problems, were not near as bad.
We are going to learn that God has a purpose, but the
key for now is that Habakkuk was right. God is so holy that He can’t tolerate
evil. When we live in a world where evil seems to reign that can be hard to see
and understand. How can this keep going on?
But then we have to remember that the Lord is slow to
anger. He is patient. He will judge evil but it will be in His way and in His
time so that people have a chance to turn to Him.
