Despised and rejected, but…

He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him. Surely He has borne our griefs And carried our sorrows; Yet we esteemed Him stricken, Smitten by God, and afflicted. But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, And by His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53v3-5

Isaiah 53 is one of those passages that we enter with total awe and reverence. The words are astounding, they beggar belief. He we read of Messiah, the Great Deliverer, the Saviour, the King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

But what do we read about Him?

Despised and rejected by men. A man of sorrows, acquainted with grief. We hid our faces from Him. He was despised and we need now acknowledge Him. We saw His stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted.

Why? Why do we see the Son of God smitten by God and rejected by men? How can that happen?

The answer is where it really gets amazing.

He bore our griefs. He carried our sorrows. He was wounded for our transgressions. The chastening to bring our peace was on Him.

The King of Kings and Lord of Lord became despised and rejected because of my sin. My healing came through the stripes He bore.

What kind of attitude does my reflect for the One who did so much for me?
